What other students are saying:
“This is the most comprehensive course I’ve seen on Udemy…” – Renato Ferreira
“This course is a must and it could be the only one you need, if you want to master Excel for any reason. It is well organized, it covers all topics of Excel, from the fundamentals (formatting, writing data, put that data to use, etc…), continuing to a more advance use of the program, like applications for the formulas included in the app. But the part that outstands in the course, is the macro-programming part. It helps you to start programming in VBA in a step by step fashion. The instructor explains every lesson quite well, he is easy to follow, and you can notice he knows the app and have lots of experience with it. He is also very responsive and will reach you as soon as he can in case you have any doubt about the topics covered in the course. For me is a five stars course, thumbs up for a well roundup course.” – David Garcia Silvarrey
“This is the best Excel course ever! I like that the topics are broken down into few minutes at a time”. – Sheryl Blosel
“This course is wonderful. If you were and absolute beginner like I was, this is the course that you should take. This course starts at the absolute beginning and shows you in detail how to use the program and how to make it do what you need it to. I am almost through section 2 and I cant believe how much I have learned and I couldn’t imagine taking an Excel course from anyone else. If you are thinking about getting an Excel course for refreshing your skills, or just starting from the beginning, this is the course for you” – Jake Rose

Introducing Visual Basic For Applications
Visual Basic for Applications, or VBA, is included with Excel, so there’s nothing more to buy. If you have Excel, you already have access to VBA.
VBA is the powerhouse. It’s the code that lives under the hood where the magic happens.
A lot of people can record a Macro, but being able to program in VBA is quite a different thing. It separates the good from the truly amazing, and I want you to be amazing!
Now, one of those words in “Visual Basic for Applications” carries more weight than the others. And no, it’s not “Basic” (though coding the way I will teach you is simple!).
No, it’s “Applications”. In fact, it’s the “s” at the very end. The significance is that VBA works across ALL MICROSOFT APPLICATIONS! Word, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, and even WINDOWS ITSELF!
In this course I will not only teach you how to code for Excel, there are even THREE, no…FOUR Bonus Sections:
-
Controlling Word
-
Controlling Outlook
-
Yes, even controlling Windows
-
and now…Automating PowerPoint!
What Makes Me Qualified To Teach You?
Well, I’m a regular guy. I don’t have a University degree, but what I do have is the drive to learn new things and never be beaten by a problem…a lot like you, I guess.
What I also have is over 20 years of experience in using Excel, and programming solutions with VBA.
I have built simple helper systems to make life easier for my colleagues. I’ve programmed complete MRP systems to run the procurement division of a £1.3b company, and everything in between.
So, I can do it, does that mean I can teach you?
You bet! I have taught hundreds of students one on one, and even more in groups. Many of my students have gone on to better paying jobs, start their own businesses, or at the very least made their work lives less stressful! One of my most recent students got a promotion and a 15% pay rise just 16 weeks after learning how to code! Not bad, hey?
Why Is Your Course Different, Alan?
I’m glad you asked!
If you got this far, you already know you get:
-
Over 15 hours of HD video lectures
-
72 downloadable resources
-
Quizzes
-
All the source code for the course + more!
-
Programming projects
There are lots of great courses on coding in VBA. There are even lots of free videos on YouTube. Many of them show you all the basics in kind of a “little bit of everything” approach. I looked at what was available, and I knew I had to create something different. Of course, I still cover all the basics, just like the other courses, but we will go beyond the basics, and cover in depth the “missing bits”.
In addition, I will teach you my step-by-step process, the actual methods I use to build powerful solutions easily and quickly. I’m sure programming can be difficult, but not the way I do it!
You will learn how streamline your code for efficiency (and make it execute faster!) from the beginning. After we’ve covered all the basics, we will go on to create 6 separate projects using those very tools and techniques, where we will pull together all of your earlier learning, and give you the confidence to program your own solutions as soon as you finish the course!
What other students are saying:
“I’m coming close to finishing this course…This course has given me the knowledge and confidence to succeed, get promoted and think seriously about building a career based on what I can learn from great teachers like Alan.” – Thomas Heaton
“Alan is an excellent tutor, goes very deep into every single thing, and he is not bothered to repeat even the smallest tricks and tips along the way. I feel like I got amazing new skill, this course has opened my eyes on how I should “see” excel from now on. Definitely the best course I have ever taken on Udemy” – Aleksandar Stankovic
With So Much Power, What Will You Create?
With the skills you will learn in this course you will be limited only by your imagination.
If you can describe it, you can most likely code it. What will YOU create?
Let’s see. Enrol now, and I look forward to welcoming you to the course!

The keyboard shortcuts in this lesson are:
CTRL + B to Bold your text
CTRL + I to apply Italics
CTRL + U to Underline
-
14A Quick Word On FormattingVideo lesson
I added this lecture as one of my students pointed out that formatting text actually formats the cell itself. Though I know this, it was apparent that not everyone does!
Throughout this course, if you think I have missed anything, or it requires more explanation, please let me know!
-
15Formatting Text - AlignmentVideo lesson
From time to time, you may want to have your data aligned in a way that Excel doesn't choose by default.
The default options are:
• Text automatically aligns to the left
• Numbers automatically align to the rightIn this lesson we take a look at how to align your text (or any data) in the cells any way you want to see it.
You will learn how to:
• Align left
• Align right
• Align centre

• Align bottom
• Align middle -
16Saving Time With AutoFilling SequencesVideo lesson
Excel offers a bunch of timesaving features, a lot of which most users aren't even aware of! By learning these, you will become faster than most of your competition :)
In this lesson we look at auto-filling naturally occurring sequences using one of Excel's most useful features; the Drag Handle.
-
17POWER USER - Adding Your Own Lists To AutofillVideo lesson
Wouldn't it be great if you could add your own custom lists, beyond the standard days of the week and months of the year?
Well now you can!
-
18Saving Time With Format PainterVideo lesson
Another time saver.

This is a clever way to bypass the annoying super wide columns if you have a long title in your workbook!
-
22Entering Data - A Couple Of ShortcutsVideo lesson
If there's a fast way of doing something, save yourself some time and do it that way!
This lecture covers a handy function built in to Excel that automatically suggests entries based on what came before! Very useful.
We also look at another use for the drag handle, this time using the double click feature to automatically fill down your data for as far as your columns go. And finally, how to instantly populate a bunch of cells with the same value using a simple, if little known, keyboard shortcut.
Keyboard shortcut in this lesson:
**** UPDATE ****
CTRL + ENTER to fill the same value in all the cells of a highlighted range. In the lecture I say "CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER" incorrectly. Sorry
-
23Sums - The Old Fashioned Way!Video lesson
In this lesson you will learn how to create your first formula...the old fashioned way!
Every formula you enter in Excel always begins with an equals sign (=). Always!
We will cover the simple way to view your formula so you can see which cells are being used in the calculation, and a quick way to correct it if you pointed to the wrong cell!
Enjoy!
-
24Sums - Using AutosumVideo lesson
Excel has lots of built in functions to make your life easier. In this lesson, you will learn how to use your first Excel built in formula; the AutoSUM.
You will learn the structure of the autosum, what arguments are and how to use ranges in your calculations!
You will also discover a little used, but very useful, built in feature of Excel, so you can instantly see the sum, average, lowest value and highest value in a range...all without having to write a single formula!
-
25Quiz Number 3Quiz
Let's see how your doing!
-
26Copying FormulasVideo lesson
In this lecture, you will learn how to copy formulas you've already written!
You will learn some super-fast keyboard shortcuts to make this really quick, and also take another look at one of my favourite features...the drag handle.
The keyboard shortcuts in this lesson are:CTRL + C to Copy
CTRL + V to paste what you've just copied
CTRL + R to fill Right
CTRL + D to fill Down
-
27SUMming HorizontallyVideo lesson
So, now you understand how to sum a column, but what if you want to use Autosum to add up a row of numbers?
In this lesson you will learn how to view a formula in one cell while you're in different cell!
This will allow you to copy the structure of the original formula, and adapt it so it works somewhere else! This saves you having to remember everything.
We will also look at how Excel will help you to use the various functions by offering tool tips to show you what you need to do!
-
28Basic Formulas - SubtractionVideo lesson
In this lesson you will learn how to do subtraction.
We will also look at how to use formulas you have already written in new formulas, to save having to write everything from scratch.
-
29Basic Formulas - MultiplicationVideo lesson
In this lesson, you will learn how to do multiplication.
You will also learn that there are two ways to express values in your formulas...you can point and click the cells you want to use (so the formula uses the cell reference (A1, C3 etc.)), and you can also just type in a number.
-
30Basic Formulas - DivisionVideo lesson
In this lesson, you will learn how to do division. Nice and simple!
-
31Average FunctionVideo lesson
In this lesson, you will learn how to use our second of Excel's built in function: Average.
You will also learn how to get to some of the other built in functions using the formula ribbon.
Finally, you will learn how to edit a formula, which saves you having to start over if most of your formula is correct.
-
32The Order Of Mathematical OperationVideo lesson
This is probably the most important lecture in the entire course!
In this lecture you will learn about the order of mathematical operation. This is the number 1 problem I see with a lot of Excel users, after this lecture you will never have this problem!
Because Excel always acts on the different mathematical operators (+, -, *, / etc.) in a specific sequence, you may not always get the answer you thought you would get!
Luckily, I have a really simple way of committing this to memory so you will always remember it!
Additional note:
Excel deals with the following in which ever order they appear:
- Multiplication and division, whichever comes first.
- Addition and subtraction, whichever comes first.
If in doubt, start with a simplified problem to which you now the answer...then build your formula to arrive at the correct answer. You will then have proven a working formula.
-
33POWER USER - Evaluate FormulaVideo lesson
In this lecture you will learn about one of the most powerful tools in Excel: Evaluate Formula. I have never seen this taught before anywhere else!!!
I literally only discovered this the day before I created this lecture...and I've been using Excel for over 20 years! I asked everyone I know who uses Excel, and none of them knew about it either.
So you will now not only understand how to explore your formulas step by step, you will know how to use a really powerful tool that almost no one else knows is there!
-
34Inserting New Columns And RowsVideo lesson
In this lecture you will learn how to insert columns and rows.
From time to time, you will realise you forgot to include something in your spread sheet, and wish that you had added it when you started. Luckily, Excel provides a really quick way of adding new columns or rows to a worksheet you have already created.
You will learn two ways to do this (just pick your favourite :)). The insert option from the home ribbon, and the right click method.
We will also cover sanity checking the formulas you have already written (just in case)!
UPDATE: In this lecture, when I insert a row, the formula automatically copies down. It has been pointed out by students using 2007, 2010 and 2016 that this doesn't work in those releases...it seems to only work on 2013 (I have all the other versions, and I've tried it...it doesn't autofill formulas on insert). Sadly, there is no setting you can apply to make it happen. You can, however, just select the cell with the formula missing, and hit CRTL and D to copy it down.
-
35Moving Existing Columns And RowsVideo lesson
You may decide that one or more of your columns would be better placed somewhere else. This lesson covers how to do that quickly and easily.
UPDATE: When we move the Opening Stock column, you will notice little green triangles appearing in the Total column. With these, just select each cell, click the yellow exclamation point (the error), and choose "ignore this error". All Excel is trying to do is establish if the "new" column B should be included in the sum (which it shouldn't).
-
36Cutting, Copying, Inserting And DeletingVideo lesson
Like the title says, in this lesson you will learn how to cut and copy (and the difference between the two), and insert and delete blocks of data (or single cells, it works the same).
-
37Hiding Columns And RowsVideo lesson
Sometimes your workbooks become too big to see everything all at once, that's when hiding certain columns or rows becomes useful. You may want to print out your worksheet for a meeting, but hide a particular column (perhaps buy prices).
In this lecture you will learn how to hide single or multiple columns and/or rows.
-
38Quiz Number 4Quiz
Let's see how your doing!
-
39ROUNDing FunctionsVideo lesson
In this lesson you will learn all three of Excels built in rounding functions:
- ROUND
- ROUNDUP
- ROUNDDOWN
...and the differences between the three. We'll also have another look at the built in tool tips when using functions, to allow Excel to help us as we're working!
You will also learn how to change a bunch of formulas all at once!
The keyboard shortcuts in this lesson are:
CTRL + F to find a certain value in a range of selected cells
-
40Formatting NumbersVideo lesson
In this lecture you will learn how to format numbers to a number of decimal places of your choosing!
You will learn a couple of ways to do this, try both, and pick your favourite.

41A Primer In Building Complex FormulasVideo lesson
In this lesson you will learn how to build your own complex formulas, and the easy way to do it. I've been using Excel for a few decades, and I still use this method to build multi-tiered complex formulas.
If you ever see a spreadsheet with a formula a mile long, just remember, the person who wrote it probably did it this way too to begin with!

42Buliding a Compex FormulaVideo lesson
In this lecture, we will apply what we learned in the last lecture to the project we're working on!
-
43SortingVideo lesson
In this lesson you will learn how to sort your data.
To begin with, you will learn how to sort alphabetically and reverse alphabetically. Nice and easy.
-
44Wrapping Text And Soft EnterVideo lesson
In this lesson you will learn how to wrap text, and soft enter (sometimes called a soft return).
Wrapping text is useful if you want your text to wrap-around and be displayed over a few lines in a particular cell, but sometimes, you want to make sure your text always appears on different lines (even though its all in a single cell). Pretty much as it would when you type in Word.

45Adding A New WorksheetVideo lesson
Possibly the shortest lecture in the whole course!
In this lesson, you will learn how to add additional worksheets to your workbook. You will also learn how to rename your worksheets to something more useful than Sheet1 and Sheet2!
-
46Creating A Simple ChartVideo lesson
In this lesson you will create your first chart from the data you have already entered.
Charts are a lot easier to make than most people think. The usual problem I find is that there are columns of data that they don't want to have in the chart. So with that in mind, you will also learn how to select two (or more) separate ranges of data at the same time!
You will also learn how to move your chart to a different sheet (the one we created in the last lecture).

48Adding BordersVideo lesson
In this lecture you will learn how to add borders to your cells.
Borders are those lines around cells you sometimes see on spreadsheets, aside from the faint grey ones that are there to make them easier to see.
We will have a quick look at the built in border options, and you'll then learn how to build your own custom border from scratch!
-
49Customizing the Quick Access ToolbarVideo lesson
In this lesson you will learn how to personalise Excel's Quick Access Toolbar.
This is a powerful thing to learn. I lose count of how many times I've seen people wasting valuable seconds navigating the ribbons to get to a function they use a hundred times a day!
Once you have this in your skills toolbox, you will be more productive than a lot of people who use Excel everyday!
-
50Simple PrintingVideo lesson
In this lesson you learn how to set up your spreadsheet to print.
You will learn a few ways to get to the print interface, and once you're there, you will learn how to make sure your print out always fits on a single page!
The keyboard shortcuts in this lesson are:
CTRL + P to print

51Freezing For An Easier ViewVideo lesson
There's nothing more frustrating than scrolling down a huge spreadsheet, not being able to see your headings anymore, so you don't know what you are looking at!
Freezing is the way to get around this problem. It is so useful, I use this feature on every single workbook I have ever made! I'm pretty sure you will too.

52Getting HelpVideo lesson
In this lecture we will take a look at Excel's built-in help function.
The help section of Excel is huge! Probably enough to fill a dozen books.
The keyboard shortcut for this lesson is:
F1 (at the top of your keyboard) gets you to Excel help.
-
53FiltersVideo lesson
Without doubt, one of the (other) most powerful tools in Excel...the Filter.
In this lesson you will learn what a filter is, how to add them, clear them, and generally manipulate them to quickly drill down to see exactly (and only) what you want to see.
You'll also learn how to instantly tell if you have any filters are applied (hint: look at the colour of the row numbers!).
I think you will be using these a lot!
-
54Highlighting CellsVideo lesson
In this lesson you will learn how to highlight cells in a myriad of colours.
You may want to do this to make certain things stand out (totals for example), or you may use highlighting to show certain cells contain formulas (so don't change them!), or you may choose to highlight cells to show that this is where data needs to be entered.
It's really quick, and really useful.
